An analysis of the terms witch and witchcraft

Although trials charging women with magic occurred in a shorter interval of time, both in Lower Satakunta and Northern Ostrobothnia there were more trials after the s than before.

Third, witches tend to be benevolently disposed toward their fellow human beings. Men were not charged with magic as long as magic was not treated as a criminal offence. A summary of this material is likely to appear shortly. Earlier the learned clergy had been more or less consistent in resisting pagan rites and magic practices.

These similarities are not trivial, but neither are the differences. The character of these trials seems to have been affected by extremely practical circumstances.

These covens are often associated with dark activity, but they are really the same as any religious group. This was the presumption of Martti Haavio - among others - in his studies based on folk poetry.

Modern Witchcraft: It May Not Be What You Think

In most trials for magic nothing emerged from action taken by authority which might point to the new theories of witchcraft which were already known in Finland. The familiar term spell is applied to the technique of harnessing and focusing this power.

What could possibly be wrong with such a seemingly benevolent religion? A tradition of soothsaying and healing might run in the same family, but - in contradiction to the general notion - charges of witchcraft and magic were not often brought against professional soothsayers and healers.

The teachings of witchcraft were studied by King James VI of Scotland - later James I of England - who explained in his book "Daemonologia" that the special power of the devil in Lapland, Finland and the Orkney and Shetland Islands was due to the fact that the ignorance of people and the audacity of the devil in these areas was greatest.

The subject is either too frightening or too silly to consider. Detailed scrutiny of the trials reveals no features indicative of paranoia, mystical dynamism or other decisive presumptions. Secular and ecclesiastical power remained within the prevailing system of popular belief and does not appear to have spread doctrines concerned with theories of witchcraft in any way.

Among court cases in the areas studied no seers can be found who with drums and incantations prepared their souls for a journey to the underworld to have dealings with the souls of the dead. As a general rule such magic practices became subject to secular law in the Finnish part of the kingdom only in the s or later, when judicial procedure changed in this regard.

The number of trials did not increase or decrease in all parishes simultaneously. Similar results have been presented in detailed studies of persecutions in other countries, and the matter has been observed by Antero Heikkinen in connection with Ostrobothnia in Finland.

Some refer to this body as the etheric body.

As witches and cunning women in the Middle Ages were almost always marginalized and lonely, they would often have small animals as pets and, at one point during the witch hysteria of Early Modern Europethe mere possession of a black cat or of an unusual pet like a frog, lizard or ratwas sufficient cause for investigation as a witch.

Another point is that I have very closely differentiated the various trials and have demonstrated that they arose in different ways. In addition judicial proceedings differed according to when and where they arose.

The religion as a whole is organized around the natural seasons that are integral to the way in which the farming industry works. Other factors certainly affected the spread of charges.Glossary of Traditional Witchcraft Terms.

The Witches

After analysis of court cases my study was directed by a paradox: condemnations for malevolent witchcraft by the official judiciary were rare, and in other respects also the successful pursuit of a witchcraft charge was made difficult by close examination.

A familiar (or familiar spirit or familiar animal) is an animal-shaped spirit or minor demon believed to serve a witch or magician as domestic servant, spy and companion, in addition to helping to bewitch enemies or to divine information.

The term witchcraft is connected with religion, mythology and anthropology. The process can be explained as a method in which people utilised magical or supernatural powers for certain purposes.

Witchcraft has been used for bad purposes as well as good purposes. The term witchcraft is certainly the most familiar within and without the practice, but it is also the term that carries with it the most unwanted baggage. It often has sinister or evil connotations, and for those reasons many within the craft prefer the term Wicca (for the practice) and Wiccan (for the practitioner).

The Witches isn't a particularly tough book to follow. There aren't any plot twists, confusing characters, or philosophically deep thoughts. Everything's pretty straightforward, and the book even h.
